Flash is the equipment/weapon given to JACK by Damon Baird in his office at DB Industries. It is the first upgrade given to JACK and acts like a hand-held and reusable Flashbang; blinding and stunning the enemy for a few seconds.[1]
It is unknown how Flash works, but the most likely theory is that - given the final upgrade - it is a form of photosensitive chemical that reacts via cryotechnics such as a laser-cooling mechanism, rather than a pyrotechnic reaction.
Strategy
Flash starts off as a 'long-range' and accurate reusable Flashbang grenade with a long cool-down period. While it works as a piece of decent tactical equipment, it would be later overshadowed by other upgrades such as Shock Trap and Hijack to name a few.
Rather, the full potential of Flash would be shown when it is fully upgraded, turning a piece of harmless stun equipment into a deadly weapon that freezes enemies in place. A fully upgraded Flash could freeze an enemy like a Cryo Cannon; turning even a frozen Warden into shattered glass after several shots. The upgrades of Flash are:
